A mental model for thinking about growth

I finally documented the model I've been using to structure growth thinking for years. Sharing it in case it helps.

If you’re ever in a mind funk about how to grow your business, maybe this mental model can help structure your thinking.

My Growth Mental Model — a mind map with Product, Brand and Distribution as the three core branches of Growth, each expanding into dozens of sub-nodes covering everything from onboarding and retention to pricing, personality, inbound and outbound.

I spent time today documenting my mental model for how I think about growth. I’ve always taken pride in my ability to connect dots and form mental models of complex systems, then visualise them. Probably why I enjoy teaching the Mapping course for Mind The Product and Pendo.

But I realised today that I have never documented this model for either myself or others. So I did exactly that.

I’m sure there are things missing. I’m aware it’s not perfect — overlap, imperfect hierarchy, the usual trade-offs — but there’s always a balance of accuracy and simplicity in these things. I’ll come back to it over time and update it as my model refines.

So if you’re somewhat new to growth, or don’t have a model of your own, and want one to get you started, here you go.

And if you’re worried about how to grow your business, just think about all of this (gesticulates wildly) and you’ll be fine.
